American Physical Society Announces New Open Access Journal PRX Energy

June 02, 2021

Latest Physical Review title will publish high impact research in energy science and applications

The American Physical Society (APS) today announced the launch of its first highly-selective, fully open access energy research journal with an emphasis on outstanding and lasting impact. PRX Energy will open for submissions in late summer 2021 with publication fees waived until 2023.

“The physics community has long been central to fundamental energy science and many resulting applications,” said APS Editor in Chief Michael Thoennessen. “But communication and collaboration across traditional boundaries is now critical, as researchers and stakeholders from a diverse array of disciplines and regions focus their efforts on achieving a sustainable energy future.”

Building on the success of Physical Review X (PRX), the world’s leading open access journal in multidisciplinary physics, PRX Energy will provide a forum to facilitate important advances in renewable and sustainable energy technologies for the benefit of humanity.

PRX Energy is the latest in a series of selective topical journals that draw on the strength of the Physical Review brand,” said APS Publisher Matthew Salter. “This new journal will enable APS to better serve scientists working at the interface of physics, engineering, and materials science.”

The journal will publish basic and applied research in energy sources, storage, and utilization as well as studies covering aspects of sustainability. PRX Energy will connect members of the interdisciplinary energy research and physics communities while broadly disseminating significant and timely results.

APS Chief External Affairs Officer Francis Slakey noted PRX Energy further expands the inclusion of applied research in the Physical Review journals. “By seamlessly connecting the communities that conduct fundamental and applied research, such as physics, chemistry, materials, engineering, technology, biology, environmental studies, and policy, we can move more quickly toward discovering the sustainable energy solutions for the future, a primary motivator of the next generation of physicists and the catalyst for industry.”

“Any physicist who is inspired to use their scientific talent to address global challenges should feel at home at APS,” said Jonathan Bagger, APS CEO.

PRX Energy follows the launch of PRX Quantum last year. These small, high-impact publications focus on new and emerging research areas while leveraging the rigorous peer review and editorial standards authors expect from the Physical Review family of journals.
