The Art of a Scientist

APS headquarters is on the fourth floor of the American Center for Physics in College Park, MD. Part of the ground floor serves as an art gallery, with exhibits that rotate twice a year. The most recent installation was unusual because one of the featured artists was Wally Gilbert, a theoretical physicist turned biologist who won the Nobel Prize in 1980. Gilbert takes digital photographs, which are then altered on the computer and blown up many-fold. He is shown here in front of one of his creations at the opening reception at the ACP in April. More of Gilbert’s artwork can be viewed on his web site, wallygilbert.artspan.com.
