Nomination Guidelines for APS Historic Sites

Instructions for Submitting a Nomination

The nomination period for Historic Sites runs from November 1, 2022, to January 31, 2023.

To submit a new nomination:

1. Log in to the nomination site using your APS credentials
2. Select “Start Honors Nomination”
3. Enter the Historic Site name
4. Select the Honor category “APS Historic Site”
5. Select “Save and Next,” enter the required information, then select “Save and Finalize” to submit

Submit a Nomination

All APS members are eligible to nominate a site that has not previously been selected as an APS Historic Site.

Nomination Components

The sponsor shall provide the following:

1. The site name and location (full address preferred)
2. Description of why this site deserves to be selected (500 words or fewer)
3. Suggested Citation (500 characters or fewer. See the Historic Sites Archive for examples.)

After the nomination deadline passes, the Historic Sites Committee will begin its review and selection process. The committee selects sites where individuals or institutions have made outstanding contributions to the physics enterprise. APS Honors staff will notify sponsors of the status of their nomination after the committee has completed their deliberations.

Sites that are selected as Historic Sites will be included in the American Physical Society Register of Historic Sites and be presented with a plaque commemorating the site's significance to physics. APS Staff will work with representatives from the sites to arrange for suitable presentation ceremonies.

Nominations are valid for one cycle, but they may be carried over to the next cycle for further consideration at the discretion of the Committee. If carried over, nominators will be notified and have the opportunity to make edits when nominations reopen the following year.
