Fritz Wagner

"For his discovery of the improved magnetic confinement regime (the so-called H-mode) in neutral-beam-heated tokamak plasmas. This research made full use of the excellent design features of the ASDEX facility at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Plasmaphysik, including its divertor, auxiliary heating and diagnostic capability, to identify, with the support of the ASDEX team, the H-mode and its relationship to edge plasma properties. The improved confinement associated with this regime of operation has been confirmed in a number of other laboratories. Its discovery increases the prospect for improved understanding of transport in magnetically confined plasmas and for exploring the physics of ignited plasmas in future fusion experiments."
