Robert C. Cauble
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Citation:

"For an exquisite series of experiments using high intensity lasers to measure the high pressure properties of hydrogen across the molecular insulator to monatomic metal transition."

Background:

Dr. Cauble received his B.S. degree in physics in 1974 from the University of Arizona and his Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering in 1980 from the University of Michigan. His thesis work involved a kinetic theory approach to transport properties in strongly coupled plasmas.

In 1980 he joined Berkeley Research Associates working at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC. There he worked in the Plasma Physics Division on theoretical predictions of the effects of high density plasma on atomic transitions and particle transport coefficients.

Since 1985 he has been at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. There he has worked on the production of atomic models for plasma simulations, as well as design and analysis experiments to utilize laboratory x-ray lasers as high density plasma probes, including interferometry. More recently, he has been working on large scale simulation and design of experiments to elicit material properties, mainly equation of state date, at extreme pressures using intense laser-driven shocks.
