Università di Roma "Tor Vergata", Rome, Italy & Gran Sasso Science Institute, L'Aquila, Italy & University of Twente, Enschede, The Netherlands

Citation:

"For seminal and visionary contributions to the development of immersed boundary methods, and for elegantly applying these methods to reveal the physics of a wide variety of fluid flows in complex geometries, including animal locomotion and heart flows."

Background:

Roberto Verzicco is full professor in Fluid Dynamics at the University of Roma `Tor Vergata' and at the Gran Sasso Science Institute of L'Aquila. Since 2010 he is also part-time Professor at the University of Twente. He is doing research in the fields of experimental and numerical fluid dynamics and from 1993 he has published more than 240 papers in international journals and 3 solicited reviews. He is involved, in particular, in the direct numerical simulation of turbulent flows, convective turbulence, geophysical flows and bio-fluid mechanics. He has investigated also complex three-dimensional flows of industrial interest using Large-Eddy-Simulation techniques. He has organized several internaltional conferences, workshops and colloquia and iIn 2012 he has organised the 9th European Fluid Mechanics Conference in Rome. He has been Chairman of the European Fluid Mechanics Conference Committee and member of the EUROMECH Council. He has served the evaluation committees, international panels and the Editorial Boards of several international journals and is presently Associate Editor of Journal of Fluid Mechanics. In November 2005 he received the Frenkiel Award 2005 from the American Physical Society for his studies on natural convection. In 2012 he has been nominated EUROMECH Fellow and in 2013 APS Fellow.
