American Physical Society Extends SCOAP3 Open Access Agreement Through 2027

Aug. 28, 2024

The extension enables authors to publish high-energy physics articles open access in three Physical Review journals at no cost.

The American Physical Society has renewed its agreement to participate in the next phase of the Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics (SCOAP3) — an international coalition of more than 3,000 libraries and research institutions from over 45 participating countries, managed by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) to fund open access publishing in high-energy physics research.

Under the SCOAP3 model, contributions from participating institutions are pooled to cover open access article publication charges for high-energy physics papers posted to arXiv and published in participating journals, including three Physical Review journals published by APS: Physical Review Letters, Physical Review C, and Physical Review D.

APS has participated in SCOAP3 since January 2018. With the current phase ending at the close of 2024 and the next phase starting on Jan. 1, 2025, this renewal ensures that authors will be able to publish high-energy physics articles open access by default in participating APS publications at no cost and without interruption through 2027. Anyone will be able to access these papers without a paywall immediately after publication. All institutions and library consortia that subscribe to participating journals will continue to receive reduced annual invoices to offset open access fees that APS collects from SCOAP3.

By extending its participation in SCOAP3, APS once again demonstrates its commitment to open science. The extension follows other similar announcements from the Society, such as a refreshed data availability policy and the adoption of Research Organization Registry identifiers. APS is excited to support growing open science initiatives across the physics research community, including in the next phase of SCOAP3.
