Andrea Welsh, Ph.D., (she/they) is a visiting assistant professor in the department of mathematics, as of fall 2024. Previously, they worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the department of mathematics at the University of Pittsburgh with Professor Bard Ermentrout on modeling spontaneous wave patterns in mouse colons. They received their Ph.D. from the Georgia Tech School of Physics in 2019 with a focus on dynamics in cardiac tissue and collective motion in active matter systems. They have previously been members-at-large for both the APS Forum of Graduate Student Affairs and the APS Forum of Diversity and Inclusion and are very passionate about improving the climate for unrepresented groups in physics, particularly of those with disabilities and of queer individuals. They have advocated to improve academic mental health in physics by forming community support groups and by educating others on practices that can affect the mental health of individuals.
